NEWPORT PAPER’S NEW MRF IS OPERATIONAL

Newport, November 2007 – Newport Paper, a specialist purchaser and recycler of recovered materials, today announced that its new MRF (Materials Recovery Facility) is now fully operational.

Located in Hockwold, Norfolk, the plant started operations on Friday 16th November, following 2 weeks extensive commissioning, and is already taking material from Local Authorities including Basildon District Council and Brentwood Borough Council.

The MRF is the first in the UK to be 100% powered by eco-friendly bio-fuel which means it can operate around the clock without the use of fossil fuels.  The generator, supplied and operated by Living Fuels, uses recycled cooking oils from Local Authorities, caterers and restaurant chains to produce its power and any surplus electricity is fed back to the national grid.

The plant is 100% owned by Newport Paper and will help to meet the increasing demand for recycling facilities from Local Authorities.  The new £2m facility was built by Nicholls Jovisa Ltd., the largest commissioned by them in the UK, and is operated exclusively by Freedom Recycling.

Designed to take in around 75,000 tonnes of mixed recyclables each year, and with a projected recovery rate of over 97%, this new generation MRF can take almost any mix of recyclables and produce the correct quality recyclate demanded by the stringent requirements of the reprocessing industry.

The new MRF facility is designed to be as efficient as possible and uses less manpower per tonne than older style MRFs.  Together with a state of the art baler the equipment includes a bag splitter, 2 sorting platforms, trommel and overband magnet which are designed to separate co-mingled materials such as newspapers, magazines, cardboard, Yellow Pages, junk mail, grey board, all plastics, aluminium and steel cans.

Matthew Hoare, Managing director of Newport Paper comments "I am delighted that our first MRF is now operational which gives us better control over the quality of recyclate given to reprocessors.  It is also a great first step towards our ambitious plans to operate 5 MRFs by the end of 2010."

NEWPORT PAPER WINS RUGBY BOROUGH COUNCIL RECYCLING CONTRACT

Newport, April 2007 – Newport Paper, a specialist purchaser and reprocessor of recycled materials, today announced that it has won a new 5-year contract with Rugby Borough Council to recycle all the mixed paper collected within the borough.

From 1st March, Newport Paper (www.newportpaper.com) has been collecting over 100 tonnes per week of kerbside recyclate, adding to its existing contracts which include the London Borough of Enfield, Lewes District Council and Basildon District council.

It was Newport Paper’s ability to recycle a wider range of papers from kerbside collection, including Yellow Pages, brown and grey board and junk mail, which helped to secure the contract.  The benefits to Rugby Borough Council are that this increases the amount of material recycled without increasing the collection costs.

Around 41,000 tonnes of household rubbish was collected in Rugby borough during 2006 of which 4,700 tonnes was recycled.  This new scheme, which extends to over 95% of households, will help increase this to 5,500 tonnes per year and help the council exceed the 20% recycling target set by the Government.
