NEWPORT PAPER WINS COUNTYWIDE CONTRACT FOR HERTFORDSHIRE’S PAPER

Newport, Shropshire – 18th December 2008: Newport Paper, a specialist purchaser and recycler of recovered materials (www.newportpaper.com) today announced that it has signed a 4-year contract with the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership for the acquisition and reprocessing of their newspapers and magazines. It makes this contract one of the largest single contracts in the UK with up to 50,000 tonnes of recovered paper to be managed per year.
The Hertfordshire Waste Partnership is made up of the County Council and 10 waste collection authorities, which between them recycled over 200,000 tonnes of waste in 2007/08 resulting in a recycling rate of 38.5%. The Partnership is working together to improve waste management and recycling throughout the county (www.wasteaware.org.uk).
Welwyn Hatfield Council is acting as the lead authority on behalf of the collection authorities involved and the county council. The contract starts on 1st December 2008 with North Hertfordshire and Broxbourne Councils being the first to commence the supply of recovered newspapers and magazines. Other authorities will join the scheme on a staggered basis when their existing contractual arrangements come to an end.
Newport Paper’s success in this highly competitive tender was largely based on meeting the financial requirements necessary, especially in terms of a providing a market leading purchase price over the term of the contract. The company is able to provide this guarantee through the strong working and contractual relationship it has with Stora Enso Langerbrugge, one of Europe’s largest paper mills.
This countywide scheme places Hertfordshire at the forefront of newspaper and magazine recycling because this contract includes all source segregated paper from kerbside collections and recycling banks, as well as any tonnages from the County’s 19 Household Waste Recycling Centres.
Cllr Derrick Ashley from the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership said: “Through the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership, authorities are working hard to deliver the objectives of our Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy in the most environmentally acceptable and cost effective way. Newport Paper really impressed us with their tender and the additional income generated will help to support and develop the waste services we offer”.
Newport Paper Company’s Managing Director Matthew Hoare added: “We’re delighted to have won this new contract, especially given its size. I’m sure this type of contract will increase in popularity because of the economies of scale that can be achieved with one supplier being used across a county. By recycling over 250,000 tonnes of recovered material, Newport Paper is now one of the biggest reprocessors of recyclate in the UK market.”
In addition to Hertfordshire County Council the 10 collection authorities that make up the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership are:
- Broxbourne Borough Council
- Dacorum Borough Council
- East Herts District Council
- Hertsmere Borough Council
- North Hertfordshire District Council
- St. Albans City and District Council
