Refuse derived fuel (RDF) is derived from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) or Commercial and industrial waste (C&I) with a net calorific value of between 8-14 MJ/kg (Mega joules per kilogram).

The material is mechanically processed in a variety of different methods to produce a RDF. The RDF can then be transported to the end recovery plant in a variety of different logistical set-ups.


Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) is primarily derived from I&C waste. There is growing market evidence that MSW can be used in the production of SRF. SRF is produced as a replacement to fossil fuels in the production of Cement and Lime. SRF net calorific value will range from 16-24 MJ/kg. The mechanical process in producing SRF is more in depth than the production of RDF. The selection of the right material at the front end is vital.

Newport Recycling currently holds contracts to export around 150,000 tonnes of RDF per year and it is an area we are expanding in. We offer the whole solution to waste management companies from collecting their RDF to storage at the port of export all the way to the EFW plant. (Energy From Waste)
